As we steadily move into October, it’s time to reflect on the September 2024 magazine covers our fave fashion glossies bestowed upon us for the month. You’re undoubtedly fully aware the September issues are the most important date on the print calendar, and titles across the globe usually go ALL out to generate buzz. To commemorate Vogue Italia‘s monumental 60th anniversary, Francesca Ragazzi commissioned six show-stopping covers lensed by the legendary Steven Meisel. Anna Wintour shunned a traditional fashion photographer for American Vogue‘s September offering, enlisting the expertise of famed film director Baz Luhrmann to shoot Blake Lively (and Hugh Jackman). Nina Garcia at American ELLE called upon the K-pop sensation Lisa (of the girl group Blackpink) as a cover girl while Marie Claire China celebrated Chinese top model Liu Wen with an array of covers.

MISS | US Vogue with Blake Lively by Baz Luhrmann

MISS | Vanity Fair with Jenna Ortega by Tom Craig
“Boring subject, boring styling, boring photography.” [A.D.C]
HIT | UK Harper’s Bazaar with Kate Winslet by Alexi Lubomirski
“It’s just one of those quintessential British Harper’s Bazaar covers that I would find hard to complain over. Kate Winslet feels perfect for a big month like September. I love the fact she’s reunited with Alexi Lubomirski (whose work I miss for UK Bazaar). The colors are lovely.” [vogue28]
HIT | US Harper’s Bazaar with Naomi Campbell by Malick Bodian
“I love that Naomi Campbell is smiling like that, on a cover. Very 90s, I like it.” [mepps]
MISS | Vogue Australia with Charli XCX by Amy Troost
“What is this atrocity? It looks so trashy, I can not. The €2 dress and the s**tty pose. This is Vogue?” [Bertrando3]
HIT | ELLE China with Jiahui Zhang by Liu Song
“Not ELLE China coming in hard on the fashion photography! Everything works here! Vogue of any edition today could NEVER!” [GERGIN]
HIT | Vogue Singapore with Sasha Pivovarova by Domen & Van de Velde
“The sight of Sasha Pivovarova on the cover of Vogue just feels like such a treat, even more so September. I wouldn’t change a single element to either of these two covers. They’re both fantastic. So vibrant, fresh and full of nostalgia.” [vogue28]
MISS | Vogue Hong Kong with Anya Taylor-Joy by Norman Jean Roy
“This is… not good. Can’t Dior stipulate something better when they buy covers?” [blueorchid]
HIT | ELLE Spain with Eniko Mihalik by Dario
“Eniko! I love her cover, especially the color scheme. It’s so commercial but it works.” [kokobombon]
MISS | Vogue Arabia with Claudia Schiffer by Kayt Jones
“Wasted potential. The fonts are enormously awful and distracting.” [lanvinray]
MISS | Vogue China with Liu Yifei by Yu Cong
“A boring and tepid intro for the new editor. Seeing what Marie Claire China and ELLE China have achieved, it’s difficult to accept this is the best Vogue China could do for a studio shoot. It’s the September issue and y’all already tired? Goodness.” [TerraVera]
HIT | Vogue Brazil with Gisele Bündchen by Lufré
“Gisele looks awesome here. So different and versatile. The extra long hair is working for me. I dig this!” [Bertrando3]
MISS | L’Officiel with Nicole Kidman by Matthew Brookes
“They made Nicole Kidman out to be a B-rate celebrity. Everything looks so cheap and tacky.” [Phungnam96]
HIT | Vogue Netherlands with Doutzen Kroes by Lachlan Bailey
“Great cover, quite impactful. I love the gaze and the hat she’s wearing.” [Srdjan]
HIT | Vogue France with Vivienne Rohner by Steven Meisel
“Love this cover. Steven Meisel’s best work this year. So fresh, and a a softer side of Meisel.” [TomBlanksFullFatMiuiMiu]
HIT | ELLE Czech with Karolina Kurkova by Branislav Simoncik
“A truly gorgeous portrait of Karolina Kurkova. I’m kinda of the thinking that the simplicity of the shot, allows for the font choice. Your eyes immediately fixate on Kurkova, regardless of the questionable font.” [vogue28]
MISS | Town & Country with Katie Holmes by Ruven Afanador
“She looks like she got wasted and started playing with someone’s wigs.” [VogueDisciple93]
MISS | UK ELLE with Alicia Vikander by Tom Schirrmacher
“What an unattractive and deeply unflattering cover! The makeup it atrocious, and it’s the lack of lashes throwing this whole thing off. Alicia looks completely washed out.” [vogue28]
HIT | Vogue Spain with Tilda Swinton & Julianne Moore by Quentin de Briey
“Wow! I really like this. Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore look like a super hot couple.” [matheus_s]
